South Australian State Migration Plan

On 5 January 2011 the South Australian Minister for Industry and Trade and Federal Minister for Immigration and Citizenship signed the South Australian State Migration Plan which has now come into effect as of this date.

The South Australian Government has further released the State Sponsored Migration List listing eligible occupations as well as special requirements. This list applies to applicants for subclass 176 Skilled Sponsored visas, subclass 475 Skilled- Regional Sponsored visas, subclass 487 Skilled- Regional Sponsored visas and subclass 886 Skilled Sponsored visas.

Requirements for South Australian State Sponsorship include but are not limited to the following criteria:

  • Age: Applicants must be less than 45 years of age at the time of sponsorship approval.
  • Nominated Occupation: Applicants must nominate an occupation on the State Sponsored Migration List which must be listed as “available” and provide a positive skills assessment from the relevant assessing authority. If the nominated occupation is not on the list, an off-list nomination may be submitted.
  • Off-List Nomination: Off-list nominations are limited to applicants for a subclass 886 visa who have recently studied at a South Australian educational institution and have met the two year study requirement. Applicants must also have an occupation on the State and Territory Skilled Occupation List or have completed a PhD or Masters by Research program with a South Australian institution and continue to reside in South Australia.
  • Work Experience: The general requirement is one year of skilled worked experience in the past two years, however certain conditions or exceptions may apply. Skilled work experience is defined as 20 hrs per week of paid employment in an occupation listed on Schedule 4 of the Skilled Occupation List. For former international students, work experience requirement is assessed only after the relevant qualification that meets the DIAC two year study requirement has been achieved.
  • English Language Ability: The English language requirement for each occupation appears on the State Sponsored Migration List and generally most occupations have a special IELTS requirement over and above the minimum DIAC requirement of an IELLTS score of 6.0 in all four components of the test.
